MATERIALS
Wool
+
Wool is a natural fiber prized for its durability, warmth, and versatility. It is an excellent material for rug-making, offering resilience and comfort underfoot. At Texture Haus, we use Tibetan and New Zealand wool.
Tibetan wool is known for its strength and slightly coarser texture, which gives rugs a rustic, artisanal feel. It’s sourced from sheep raised in the high altitudes of Tibet, where the tough environment produces wool with robust, long-lasting fibers. New Zealand wool, in contrast, is celebrated for its softness and fine texture. Sourced from sheep that graze in New Zealand's lush pastures, this wool is smooth and luxurious, with a bright, clean appearance that takes dye beautifully, resulting in vibrant and soft-to-the-touch rugs.
Mohair Wool
+
Mohair wool is a luxurious and silky fiber obtained from the Angora goat. Known for its exceptional softness and lustrous sheen, mohair is often used in high-end textiles, including rugs. The fibers are finer and smoother than traditional sheep's wool, giving mohair a distinctive shine and a soft, elegant shape.
Mohair wool is also highly durable and resistant to wear, making it a great choice for rugs that are both beautiful and long-lasting. It has excellent insulating properties, providing warmth in the winter while remaining cool and breathable in the summer. Mohair also takes dye exceptionally well, resulting in vibrant, rich colors that enhance the natural sheen of the fiber. When used in rug-making, mohair wool adds a touch of luxury and sophistication, with a silky texture that feels incredibly soft underfoot.
Silk
+
Silk is a highly prized natural fiber known for its unparalleled softness, sheen, and elegance. Harvested from the cocoon of the silkworm, silk is one of the most luxurious materials available, often used in fine textiles and high-end rug-making. Its fibers are incredibly smooth and strong, giving silk a delicate yet durable quality that enhances the refinement of any rug.
Silk has a natural luster that reflects light beautifully, creating a subtle glow that adds depth and richness to the colors in a rug. It also has a wonderfully soft and smooth texture, making it a pleasure to walk on. While silk rugs are more delicate and require careful handling, their exquisite beauty and refined texture make them a statement piece in any space. Incorporating silk into rug-making results in a product that exudes luxury and sophistication, with a softness and sheen that are unmatched by other fibers.
Alpaca
+
Alpaca wool is a luxurious and versatile fiber known for its incredible softness, warmth, and lightweight feel. Sourced from alpacas native to the Andean regions of South America, this wool is prized for its fine texture and natural luster. Unlike sheep’s wool, alpaca wool is naturally hypoallergenic and contains no lanolin, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin.
Alpaca fibers are strong and resilient, yet softer than most other natural fibers, giving rugs made from alpaca wool a plush, velvety feel. The fiber’s unique structure also provides excellent insulation, making alpaca wool rugs exceptionally warm and cozy while remaining lightweight and breathable. Additionally, alpaca wool takes dye beautifully, resulting in deep, vibrant colors that retain their brilliance over time. Rugs made from alpaca wool offer a luxurious, soft underfoot experience, combined with durability and timeless elegance.
Cashmere
+
A rug made of cashmere is the epitome of luxury and refinement. Cashmere, sourced from the undercoat of cashmere goats, is one of the most sought-after fibers in the world, known for its extraordinary softness, warmth, and lightness. When used in rug-making, cashmere creates a product that is incredibly soft to the touch, with a delicate, velvety texture that feels sumptuous underfoot.
Cashmere rugs have a natural, understated sheen that enhances their rich, elegant appearance. While cashmere is not as durable as some other fibers, it offers unparalleled comfort and a sense of opulence. These rugs are best suited for low-traffic areas where their softness and beauty can be preserved and appreciated. A cashmere rug is a true statement piece, adding a touch of sophistication and luxury to any space.
Plant Fibers
+
Rugs made from plant fibers like cactus and nettle (often referred to as "allo" in regions like Nepal) offer a unique blend of sustainability, durability, and natural beauty. These fibers are harvested from hardy plants that thrive in various climates, making them an eco-friendly choice for rug-making.
Cactus fiber, often derived from the agave plant, is strong and resilient, with a slightly coarse texture that adds a rustic, natural charm to rugs. It has a subtle sheen and can be woven into intricate patterns, creating rugs that are not only durable but also visually striking. Cactus fiber rugs are particularly well-suited for spaces that embrace a natural or organic aesthetic.
Nettle, or allo fiber, is another exceptional plant-based material known for its strength and durability. The fibers are fine yet tough, and when woven into rugs, they create a fabric that is both lightweight and incredibly sturdy. Allo fibers have a soft, natural luster and can be dyed in rich, earthy tones, making these rugs a beautiful addition to any room with a focus on sustainable, natural materials.
Rugs made from cactus and nettle fibers also blend well with other materials, offering a very unique, tactile experience that combines the rugged durability of plant fibers with the refined beauty of hand-crafted textiles.
